Synopsis:
Sines is an industrial complex and a Atlantic gateway to Europe. The silhouette of huge ships on the horizon, is a familiar image. But amongst these giants, a generation resists, representing the traditional fishing and the resilience of an activity that stubbornly resist the passage of time. Forming a symbiosis between tradition and innovation, fishing remains a living force in Sines.

During a year the “Mar de Sines” team traveled through this coast and have had close contact with the local coastal communities, recording how they explore the sea and its resources. The sea is the common denominator of all the protagonists. It is both the adversary to be faced and the father figure that provides sustenance. This film travels in search of the strategies adopted by these communities in order to survive in a harsh and remote environment.

Starting with a a simple raft of reeds, we follow the shellfish gatherers and the more complex arts such as trammel nets and seine fishing , discovering the importance of gestures, sounds and artifacts that today are on the edge of existence as the zinga, the chui, the ribileva, the mud bucket or the longlining.
From this collective memory, narrated in the first person, this documentary draws, with the help of the community, a portrait of a generation that made of fishing its life.

Director’s Bio:
Born in 1985, in Vila Nova de Milfontes, on the coast of Alentejo, Portugal. Diogo Vilhena grew between the river, the sea and the plains, learning the language of the land and traditions on his grandfather’s field and in the sewing workshop of his grandmother. He became interested in the visual world very early and in his youth he had some experiences in video, radio and photography.

In 2008, he finished his degree in Sound and Image, specialising in image in ESAD (IPL campus), having already attended workshops in directing and screenwriting. Still as a student, he co-directed the documentary short film ‘Cinema com Gente Dentro’, which means ‘Cinema with Soul’, about what remains of the traveling cinema in Portugal. The film earned several distinctions, and was showed in Fantasporto 2010.

In 2009, after acquiring experience in advertising and corporate video in Lisbon, he returned to Alentejo whith the expectation of developing projects with the community in the areas of culture, history and ethnography, his interests of all time.

In Sines, Diogo started collaborating with the Municipality of Sines. Since then, he plans and directs, the television ads for the FMM – World Music Festival, an international reference festival, and he is also responsible for the events video coverage as well as the national and international video promotion. In partnership with the Museum of Sines he has been working on the project ‘Network of Time’ collecting oral and intangible heritage of the region. He directed the documentary film ‘From Silence to Freedom – 25th April in Sines’, a project developed together with the Municipal Archive for the 40 years celebration of the 25th April of 1974.

Diogo have been involved in many other projects dedicated mainly to heritage. Some of those works have been with museums like the Centre of Condeixa, the Museum of Leiria recieved EMYA Silletto prize and the Mining Complex of the Roman Gold of Tresminas, directed by Rui Pedro Lamy, that already recieved two awards for best documentary in Arkeolan and El Viriato de Oro.

He directed his first feature film in 2015, the documentary film, ‘Sea of Sines’, a project with the community that compiles 100 first person interviews and more than 250 hours of real context recording, with the aim of making a portrait of three generations of people dedicated to artisanal fishing that resist in this part of the country.

Producer:
António Campos

BA in History Branch of Cultural Heritage at the University of Évora, António Campos lived most of his life in Sines, his homeland. From childhood he was listening to the memories of his family where he remembered the Sines village of the recent past, but whose reality was so different from the industrial center known all his life.

In 2008 he began his collaboration with the Museum of Sines, where he joined the team of ‘Network of Time’ project, whose aim was to make collections of oral memory of Sines. Simultaneously participates in the project “Celebration of Coastal Culture” sponsored by Mutual of Fishermen and co-financed by the city of Sines and whose objective was to safeguard the tangible and intangible heritage of the Portuguese coastal communities. This second project allowed him to deepen their knowledge and relationship with the fishing communities of Sines.

This work with fishing communities would continued when, in late 2014, Diogo Vilna invited him to participate in “Sea of Sines” project. For a year they traveled through the territory of Sines and discovering its people, collecting old photographs, stories and memories that would be returned to the community in a documentary format on 25th of April 2016.
